A one-day Tear Jerker Triathlon will take place in May at Elveden Estate, the home of Ned Iveagh of the Guinness family.
The off-road Tear Jerker comprises a 750-metre swim in Elveden’s reservoir, a 25km mountain bike race and a 5km run.
This sporting event is called the Tear Jerker because it aims to be the most demanding in East Anglia, and because the estate is a major UK onion grower. Peeling onions is well known for making people well up, of course!
The race is open to all comers aged 17 and over.
At over 4,000 hectares (10,000 acres), the farm is one of the largest single farm units in lowland Britain and possibly the largest grower of vegetables working entirely on own land.
Triathletes may want to recover at the estate’s Elveden Inn which has just re-opened after a major refurbishment.
The Elveden Inn offers cask ales, Guinness, of course, and a menu that includes Steak and Elveden Ale Pie, Haddock in Guinness Batter and Game Hotpot.
Produce is sourced from the Elveden farm and wild countryside wherever possible.
The inn also has four newly-opened boutique-hotel style rooms.
This is the first time that Elveden has opened its gates to the public for a sporting event like this.
The Tear Jerker Triathlon starts at 9am on Sunday 27 May.
