The Fanfare

The ancient Mystery Plays that have been performed in York since the 14th century will take place again in August 2012.

The Passion Plays of England are some of the oldest pieces of English literature.

They present a biblical history of the world and were originally performed on the streets of Britain’s medieval cities on the Feast Day of Corpus Christi.

In York, they began in 1376, at a time when few people could read or write.

The plays are made up of 48 individual pageants that tell the history of the world from the creation to Judgement Day.

A manuscript of the York Plays dating back from 1463 still survives in the British Library.

This year, the York Mystery Plays will be performed next to St Mary’s Abbey in the gardens of York Museum.

The last full-scale production of this size was the Millennium Mystery Plays at York Minster in 2000.

This year, around 1,200 volunteers will join professional artists and technicians, and the event will be one of the largest theatrical productions staged in the UK.

A theatre with 1,400 audience seats (all under cover) will be built within the Abbey’s ancient walls.

Performances of the Mystery Plays will take place Mon–Sat at 7.30pm between 2 and 27 August, with 2.30 matinees on Saturdays.

Ticket prices from £12 to £42.
