One of Britain’s most unusual cinemas, Kinema in the Woods, celebrates its 90th birthday in 2012.
The unique Kinema in the Woods is in the Edwardian spa town of Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire in the east of England.
It was originally a sports and entertainment pavilion, built in the late 19th century in the grounds of the Victoria Hotel.
When the hotel burnt down in 1920, Sir Archibald and Lady Weigall bought the ruins and the sports pavilion.
With the help of Captain Carleton Cole Allport they turned the pavilion into a cinema which opened in September 1922.
In the Second World War the cinema was popular with the many servicemen stationed in the area, who called it the ‘Flicks in the Sticks’.
A second auditorium, the 92-seat Screen Two, opened in 1994.
The Kinema’s Screen One is believed to be the UK’s only full-time cinema still using rear projection, and has a 1927 Compton Cinema Organ which the resident organist plays every Saturday night and at concerts throughout the year.
The Kinema in the Woods is open every evening with matinee showings on Saturdays, Sundays and during the school holidays.
Tickets currently cost £6.30 adults, £4.90 seniors/under-15s and £21 Family Ticket.
Plans for a celebratory weekend in September include behind the scenes tours and classic film shows.
